One of the most important capacities in Texas Holdem Poker is evaluating the hand. The concept “pot odds” is a base concept that differentiates a winner from a usual player. It represents the report between the size of the bet you are about to make and the total pot. For example, in case the pot is 12 $ and you need to bet 3 $ to play the respective hand, you have pot odds of 1:4. It is important for the pot odds to be favorable for your winning chances. In fact, one of the basic strategies of the advanced players is not to play the respective hand unless this report is smaller than 1:5. This concept is also known in the
specialized books as risk/reward ration. If you take your chances with a bet, than the potential pot must be big enough to convince you to play that hand.
The pot odds calculation must be used in different situations, including the moments when you need to take a decision about playing or not playing a hand.
However, if you have a weak hand with small chances of winning, it is better to adjust your expectations accordingly. In those situations, it is recommendable not to risk big sums, even if the pot odds are in your favor.
